Commodity options trading graduate programme


Over the course of twelve months, you will rotate and work in several functions, including Operations, Chartering, Trading, Treasury, Trade Finance, Risk and Administration. HR and you will further meet with representatives from the business side. You will get an understanding of the daily tasks and how our business units work together. Shell Deer Park Refinery and then went on to an operations role in the natural gas liquids trading group, became a trader in that group, and then moved onto the crude trading group from there. First of all I think the strong analytical skills have definitely helped me. You have to be comfortable with risk. Our traders, they normally visit their counterparties or refineries, from junior analyst level we also work closely with colleagues from parts of the organisation just to get the information flow and the information flow in this place is very important. Shell and my understanding of the leader is we have to be truthful to the people who work with us and who work for us, and we have to take care of them and inspire them, create enough space for them to do their job properly. That makes it quite complicated, so you need to be able to work as a team. This is actually a pretty accommodative environment I would say.

But collaboration, particularly as an XP hire, as an experienced professional hire has been the most important because I needed to build relationships very quickly in Shell to understand the business, but also to make those key contributions. So I want to understand trading at its most simplest level; like, if I trade gas and oil, I can trade widgets and corn, you know. Christine speaking to the female colleague. But then on a personal development perspective, the opportunity to grow in Shell, who are such a large company, there are so many different business lines, different areas where you can apply your skills, that to me is a huge selling point for Shell, a big employee value proposition, if you will.

In addition to this, there are thousands of firms, which include insurance companies, investment houses and financial advisers. An assessment may include interviews and psychometric tests, sometimes all in one day. Regular moves between banks are possible at all levels, although such moves are more common from associate level and above.


Banks may start to fill positions once applications open so you are strongly advised to apply early. Check with your university careers service for a list of past students working in the industry who are happy to be contacted. Closing dates are normally in late October and early November for opportunities starting in the following summer or autumn. The vast majority of traders are employed by investment banks. You must be able to promote yourself effectively and give evidence of the reasons you believe you will be successful in this career. Overseas travel is occasionally required and, depending on the client base, is likely at least once a month for traders in sales.


The City is made up of a number of financial institutions involved in banking, asset management, insurance, and services to business. Treasury departments of very large companies may employ a few traders, but this is less common. As many trading banks are international, there are opportunities to work in other locations and countries. This training is supplemented by lectures, seminars and conferences. There is keen competition between investment banks and selection is equally rigorous. Graduate trainees are expected to learn quickly from other traders when starting out and need to be prepared to take on some menial tasks, such as data analysis and administrative duties, to assist other traders. Training is provided on the job and is often organised on a rotational desk basis. If you have proved yourself after about five years, it is usual to be given responsibility for a small team, possibly two or three small teams, and then to head up a new desk trading a new product or in a new country. Entry without a degree or HND is difficult, although it may be possible to enter the industry in administrative roles, make contacts, and eventually move into trader positions. They are intermediaries between the client and the market maker. Products include securities and other assets such as futures, options and commodities.
